MUST WATCH: Tkay Maidza shares lush and fun new visual for single, ‘You Sad’ – Reignland
Australian-based singer and rapper, Tkay Maidza has released her much anticipated visual for her new single, ‘You Sad’. This single comes off of her newly released EP, ‘Last Year Was Weird, Vol. 2’. The colorful and dreamlike world features a vivid blossom field and clouds in a purple-blue sky that takes the shape of phones among other things.
According to her press release, It’s a modern hallucination that feels like a familiar dreamscape. Maidza blossoms as she sings straight through the track with her lush vocals over the delicate guitar plucks infused with a smooth synth sound that sits in the back of the melody. The intoxicating whistled hook helps you get more lost in the world she created.
The background harmonies flow so effortlessly through the song. Her style in this reminds me of artists like Tierra Whack or SZA who create their own lane with their creative direction. The cover art for her EP really showcases this with it’s detail design. The video is directed by award-winning UK filmmaker, Jocelyn Anquetil who likes to create digitally-enhanced experiences like the one you see in the video.
“You Sad” follows prior singles “Awake,” a collaboration with Baltimore rapper JPEGMAFIA, and “Shook,”. Her versatility has won her praise from Pitchfork, The FADER, NME, and The Guardian. Be sure to watch the video above and listen to the full project because you won’t be disappointed.
